Advanced Forensic Mapping Workshop
Free
This intensive three-day workshop is modeled after the Kentucky State Police (KSP) forensic mapping response to the I-75 mass shooting. The incident required an integrated approach using optical total stations, X7 laser scanners, GNSS receivers, and unmanned aerial systems (UASs). Challenging terrain, including dense tree cover and heavy foliage, necessitated multiple instrument setups and the complex merging of control points from various platforms.
Participants will begin with a hands-on refresher in operating optical total stations, with an emphasis on making multiple instrument moves and maintaining control accuracy across the scene. As the course progresses, students will incorporate laser scanning, GNSS data, and aerial imagery captured via UAS to build a comprehensive, georeferenced forensic map.
The workshop culminates in a final capstone project that simulates the I-75 mass shooting response. Students will apply all acquired skills and technologies to document and map a complex mock scene, demonstrating proficiency in advanced forensic mapping techniques used in real-world critical incidents.
Students are required to bring the following equipment to class:
Optical Total Station with all accessories, with fully charged batteries
X7 or X9 Scanner with all accessories and fully charged batteries
Alienware or Dell Latitude laptop, power cable, and a 3-button mouse.
